Job Description

BRAC is an international development organisation founded in Bangladesh in 1972 that partners globally with over 100 million people living with inequality and poverty to create opportunities to realise their potential.

Senior Project Officer (Legal Officer) will provide response and prevention services to ensure access to justice through direct interventions impacting the lives of women, girls, men and boys, diversified gender and mainstreaming in other response programming and operational areas for ensuring access to justice through providing legal assistance.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate with UNHCR Legal Protection team to ensure timely and effective delivery of legal assistance to PoCs

  • Provide legal counseling, advice, and representation to PoCs at police stations, courts and during mediation process.

  • Conduct legal awareness sessions for refugees, community leaders, and religious leaders in camps.

  • Facilitate dispute resolution among PoCs, maintain mediation records, and follow up on settlements

  • Assist PoCs in filing with complaints, FIRs, GDs, cases and conduct detention and prison visit as needed.

  • Collaborate with law enforcement to rescue trafficking victims and provide legal support.

  • Train, mentor and build the capacity of staff and refugee volunteers (paralegals) on legal assistance.

  • Maintain effective coordination with PoCs, local authorities, protection partners, and other stakeholders to address legal needs.

  • Prepare and submits legal statements, reports and work plans on schedule for internal and donor purposes.

  • Promote team development by providing feedback, coaching and supporting a collaborative work environment.

  • Collaborate with other BRAC departments, partner organization, NGOs, government authorities, and UN agencies to ensure program alignment and effective implementation.

  • Interpret laws and precedents, develop case strategies, gather evidence and perform administrative and reporting tasks as required.

Safeguarding

  • Ensure the safety of Programme Participants, people who come into contact with the organisation and team members from any harm, abuse, neglect, harassment and exploitation including sexual exploitation and abuse (SEA) to achieve the programme`s goals of safeguarding implementation. Act as a key source of support, guidance and expertise on safeguarding for establishing a safe working environment

  • Practice, promote and endorse the issues of safeguarding policy among team members and ensure the implementation of safeguarding standards in every course of action

  • Follow the safeguarding reporting procedure in case any reportable incident takes place and encourage others to do so.

Experience

  • At least 2 years
  • The applicants should have experience in the following business area(s): NGO, Development Agency

Education

    • Master of Law (LLM)
  • Master’s at Law from any UGC approved university

  • Advocateship from Bangladesh Bar Council (Mandatory)

Additional Requirements

  • Age At least 18 years
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in legal issues and their application in humanitarian or minimum 2 years of experience of practicing in district courts.

  • Strong writing skills and experience in writing Qualitative and Narrative reports.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize work and competing tasks, meet deadlines and maintain composure.

  • Excellent communication, listening and observation skills, including ability to create trust, support, maintain confidentiality, respect of all ages, background and diversity.
