Job Summary
The Manager – Laboratory Medicine is responsible for leading and managing all operational, technical, and administrative aspects of a hospital-based clinical laboratory. This position ensures high standards of diagnostic accuracy, regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, and team performance across multiple laboratory disciplines, including Biochemistry, Histopathology, Microbiology, Immunology, Serology, and Transfusion Medicine. The role combines strategic planning, quality assurance, technical oversight, and staff leadership to support timely, safe, and effective patient care.
Key Duties & Responsibilities
1. Strategic Planning & Operations
Develop, implement, and regularly update laboratory policies, SOPs, and operational guidelines across all diagnostic sections.
Coordinate interdepartmental workflows to ensure efficient specimen handling, processing, and reporting.
Align lab operations with hospital goals, patient care standards, and healthcare trends.
2. Quality Assurance & Accreditation
Establish and monitor QC/QA programs; conduct internal audits and participate in external proficiency testing.
Lead laboratory accreditation efforts (e.g., ISO 15189, JCI) and ensure ongoing compliance with national and international standards.
Enforce laboratory safety protocols, including biosafety, PPE use, infection control, and waste management.
3. Personnel & Staff Management
Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and performance evaluation for all lab personnel, including section heads and technologists.
Implement continuing education programs, SOP training, CMEs, and skill-building workshops.
Foster a collaborative and accountable workplace culture.
4. Technical Oversight
Supervise diagnostic testing processes to ensure accuracy, validity, and timely reporting.
Review and authorize critical test results; ensure timely escalation of panic values to clinicians.
Approve new testing methodologies and maintain operational excellence of laboratory equipment and assays.
5. Transfusion Medicine Stewardship
Manage the operations of the blood bank, ensuring compliance with transfusion medicine protocols.
Review transfusion practices, adverse reactions, and blood inventory usage in coordination with the hospital’s Transfusion Committee.
6. Budget & Financial Management
Develop and oversee annual budgets, controlling costs related to staffing, reagents, equipment, and consumables.
Assess vendor contracts, explore income-generating opportunities, and implement cost-saving initiatives.
7. Equipment & Inventory Control
Manage procurement, maintenance, and calibration of all laboratory instruments.
Ensure proper inventory management for reagents, kits, and consumables, coordinating with supply chain teams.
8. Communication & Collaboration
Act as the primary liaison between the laboratory and clinical departments, hospital administration, and quality teams.
Provide expert advice on test selection, result interpretation, and diagnostic troubleshooting.
9. Research & Continuous Improvement
Initiate and support clinical research, audits, and pilot programs aimed at improving diagnostic efficiency and patient outcomes.
Stay current on technological advancements and advocate for innovation in lab services.
10. Regulatory Compliance & Safety
Maintain full compliance with local and international regulatory frameworks and laboratory standards.
Identify, investigate, and resolve safety risks; document and implement corrective/preventive actions
Experience
- At least 10 years
- The applicants should have experience in the following business area(s): Hospital
Education
- Bachelor of Science (BSc)
Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, laboratory science, biochemistry, microbiology or a related scientific discipline.
Master’s degree or advanced certification in Laboratory Management, Healthcare Administration, or related field is an advantage.
Additional Requirements
- Minimum 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a clinical laboratory setting, including at least 2 years in a managerial or supervisory role overseeing multi-disciplinary laboratory operations.
- Experience with laboratory accreditation processes.
- Familiarity with LIS (Laboratory Information Systems),inventory control, equipment maintenance, SOP development, and data/statistical software and modern diagnostic platforms.
- Expertise in quality control/assurance, regulatory compliance (biosafety, occupational safety, accreditation standards ), and documentation practices.
